City Watch: Interview With Peruvian Artist Betty Seminario

What’s your definition of an artist?
Being true to yourself, according to Betty Seminario, a Peruvian-born artist, who struggled to keep her artistic identity when she moved to New York.

Seminario creates cartoon-like paintings that depict lively folk scenes, often from her native land, Peru. She recently shared her story with The Epoch Times in her studio on Staten Island.

Epoch Times (ET): What is your artistic background?
Betty Seminario: I have been drawing since I was 5 years old. My father was an established artist who pioneered cartoons in Peru. My mother used to draw too, but she gave it up to take care of the family.

ET: How did you come up with your unique painting style?
Seminario: My grandfather was born in Cuzco, Peru. His family is descendents of the Incas. He loved the Andean music, art, and language, and I was surrounded by it all through my childhood. I was always very attracted to the colors in Peruvian customs, and their way of life gave me the inspiration for my work.
